0009. tom waved at me as i stepped out of the gantry at dover mrt. he is vietnamese but speaks a passable level of english. the AI-S 50mm f1.4 E prime lens he held in his hands that was made in the 80s looked haggard and frail, but it felt substantially heavy when he passed it to me.
although the front element was speckled with dust, as i tested some shots, i found that they made no impact on the images at all. the focus ring was smooth and result bokeh was creamy from f2.8 onwards. i liked it. especially when i had to put in effort to make sure the manual focus was sharp instead of relying on the automation of a modern dslr.
so i paid him, and bought his word too that if i wanted a full refund, i could meet him again within a month. basically, i was renting this lens until i decide it's good enough not to return it for my money.
manual focusing and metering is troublesome, but they let me learn the most out of this hobby. i hope in time to come, my experiences will be put to good use. =)
